On Monday afternoon the Bookham Afternoon Bridge Club held a lunch before getting down to the serious business of playing Bridge. In the evening of music the Mole Valley Silver Band gave a rousing performance to a good audience in the Old Barn Hall with very accomplished playing and a wide repertoire of popular tunes.
On Tuesday it was the Craft Open Morning with hand crafted articles displayed and for sale together with teas, coffees and raffle. In the evening Quiz Night took place, an annual trial of the mind where the teams of eight people battle through sets of questions of all kinds. The sting in the tail is that the winning team has to lead and arrange the quiz the following year and the losing team pays the penalty of providing teas and snacks and washing up. It doesn’t really pay to win or lose! This year was exceptional for the BCA team who did not achieve the distinction coming either last or next to last. The reason was only that they came last the previous year and consequentially had to make teas instead!
The Bridge Supper on the Thursday was arranged by the Bookham & District U3A - a relaxed evening of Bridge after an enjoyable cold supper.
Friday night was Dixieland Jazz Night with Brian White and his Magna Jazz Band continuing the tradition by providing the marvellous sound and atmosphere in the crowded hall. There was no way that an enthusiastic audience could not enter into the spirit of the evening to the sounds of clarinet, cornet, trombone, piano, bass and drums. The hall was packed with tables and people but there was still enough room for spontaneous dancing to wonderful traditional music. Half time came and drinks, crisps, nuts and other snacks were pushed aside whilst fish and chips were unpacked to everybody’s delight. The only thing missing this year was the umbrella parade - unfortunately Jill and Malcolm Barrett couldn’t be there to lead the procession. Everything was enthusiasm, the band, the jazz, conversation at the tables, dancing, raffle and singing
Village Day and the whole week sustains the strength of Bookham as a village and is enjoyed by all. It also makes a major contribution to the BCA fund to maintain the Old Barn Hall as a centre of village life. |
