Plans are now finalised for our trip to the Italian Riviera, the only change being a return journey by air to avoid the busiest period on French railways. A trip to South Wales is arranged for November. In February fifty members went by coach to hear the R.P.O. at the Festival Hall, under its conductor Danielle Gotti with Jasminku stancul as soloist in Mozart’s piano concerto number 23. Members would like to know more about Popodopoulo who composed the piano encore. Recent speakers at our monthly meetings have included a fascinating talk on honey bees by the only professor in the subject based at his research unit in Sussex University. In February a senior executive talked about the Mole Valley District Council, the problems of maintaining services with financial cuts, and the Council’s role in the Olympic cycling event. He received a very sympathetic hearing. The recently appointed Chief Constable of Surrey, Mrs. Lynne Owens, gave us a fascinating insight into her work. She had been the lead for public order policing in London, and we were surprised to hear that normally respectable families were involved in the looting. She was also involved in policing the Royal Wedding and came close to changing the event at the Abbey because of a feared bomb placement. Future speakers will talk on waste reduction, clean nuclear energy and the speaker for our ladies’ lunch in May will be Nigel Eaton from the Wisley Plant Centre. Iden Coleman |
