Gardens of Bookham Open Day 2012

Sunday 17th June 2012

The imposition of a hosepipe ban is a challenge to gardeners everywhere, and especially to those who have agreed to open their gardens for Bookham’s seventh Open Garden Sunday.   Whatever the weather though, we can be sure that garden lovers will enjoy the experience of visiting a dozen or so private gardens.  All tastes are catered for, with formal and informal gardens, many with vegetable plots, wild-life areas and much more.

We are delighted that Polesden Lacey Infant School and the Dawnay School are to open their gates again this year.  The enthusiasm of staff, children and volunteers is incredible and those who visited the school gardens last year were amazed at what had been achieved. This year too I’m sure you will receive a warm welcome.  We are again grateful to the National Trust who have kindly agreed to allow one free entry per ticket holder to Polesden Lacey gardens during the week after Open Gardens day.

Delicious refreshments will be available at the Old Barn Hall, where there will also be a plant stall.  1st and 3rd Bookham Scout Groups and Manor House  School  are again kindly loaning minibuses and this enables us to provide a free minibus service along the garden route.  There is a real sense of community on Open Gardens Day, and we are very grateful to all those who have helped over the years, with serving refreshments, making a cake, selling tickets, driving a minibus, stewarding in one of the open gardens, or assisting with car-park duties . If you would like to help for an hour or two on the day there would still be time to visit the gardens, and we should love to hear from you.  We should like to say a special thank you to our sponsors, The Vineries Garden Centre and also to Inside Outside Marquees for their support and encouragement.

We look forward to seeing many of you on June 17th.  Whether or not the sun shines you will receive a warm welcome from our friendly garden openers, who are always willing to share horticultural tips and ideas. As well as providing an enjoyable day out the event also helps to raise money for the maintenance of our lovely Old Barn Hall.
