Jazz Club

I hope most of you have seen our first entry in the Bookham Bulletin for which we have to thank Editor Martin Warwick. It did some good immediately, as we saw local people joining us for their first Sunday soiree with the Savannah Jazz band, they all seemed to go home happy.  They were here for there only visit for this year, as with their last visit there was unstinting praise for everything they played. A great day all round. I am trying for a minimum of two visits next year as they are always very busy.

In March there was Brian Carrick’s Algiers Stompers a great band of well travelled Pro. musicians with a decent Mothers day crowd in support of their efforts. Last set turned over to mainly requests. Majority went home happy.  A fortnight later there were the Golden Eagle Jazz band, love playing for us here and at the Cross. They are booked here and also at Preston Cross this year. This band has got great local support.

In April T.J. Johnson and his band played. Although this is not the normal style of jazz offered on our Sunday sessions this is a VERY popular band with absolute unique vocals from Band leader T.J. T.J. has a superb line up which includes Tony Pitt (ex Terry Lightfoot) on banjo and guitar and Al Nicholls on Tenor.  On the 22nd it was the turn of The New Orleans Z’Hulu’s based on the Continent with a couple of Brits in the mix within the band. Brian Turnock on Bass, John Defferary Clarinet, both highly rated Muso’s. The band also includes one of the very few female drummers on the jazz scene today - something slightly different.

Great support at both venues for this year so far - why - how the time just seems to fly by. Speaking for ourselves keeping very busy and enjoying what we do is a factor that’s for sure.
