Once again we can look back on a most successful Village Day. I don't know how much longer the weather will be kind to us but it's many years since it really interrupted the day.  This year it was another bright day although perhaps a bit chilly in the breeze.  It seemed that the procession down the High Street was longer and larger than ever before and it took some time to squeeze everybody into the arena on the Old Barn Hall field.  Everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves watching the brightly coloured clowns and circus performers and touring the stalls and exhibitions.

Events such as Village Day and Week do not happen by accident and much hard work goes into them and by a relative few.  The Village Day committee starts work almost as soon as the previous event is over and it is not just committee work but also active involvement.  There is a constant need for people to assist in the many aspects of village life not just for Village Week but in all the clubs and societies.  The work is rewarding in creating a host of new friendships but still more and more people are required.  If you can contribute please do offer.  All the phone numbers are at the back of the Bulletin.

We have to thank everybody who assisted in making Village Week such a success.  Behind all that happens we must remember that one of its main purposes is the funding of the Old Barn Hall.  The week this year provides a major addition to the funds of the Bookham Community Association, this year over £18,000 - a marvellous amount.  All this goes towards the upkeep of the hall as a centre of village life.  The funds are needed to maintain the Old Barn Hall with its three halls and resident caretaker.  There is always outstanding work to be done on its structure and fittings, new kitchens, floors, windows and drainage.

Bookham is unique as a village in terms of the opportunities it offers.  What other village has around a hundred clubs and societies?  Additional to these hundred are the two U3As each of which has over 40 subgroups.  It is difficult to think of an interest that has not got a society to support it.  There is no excuse for anybody to lack a good set of friends with interests similar to like their own.

Remember all these things and appreciate that we have a delightful village worth preserving and serving.  Thanks must go to all those who worked towards the success of Village Day and Week.
