EB - Epidermolysis Bullosa - is a genetic condition where the skin breaks at the slightest touch, causing painful, open blisters and wounds. EB can mean a life of extreme pain, disability and, at its worst, is fatal in infancy. People with severe EB are likely to contract a fatal skin cancer. DebRA provides specialist EB nursing, funds extensive medical research and provides counselling, welfare, respite and advocacy.
When a child is born with EB the proteins that normally hold the skin together do not function. This means that outer skin and internal linings can be so fragile that a knock or rub, even a parent's hug can cause agonising blisters, tearing and permanent damage. Currently there is no cure.
Pam Wheeler and Lynda Bodell (and hopefully Pam’s son-in-law and grandson) will be walking 9 miles along the Horsley Jubilee Trail to help raise money for research into this terrible disease. We would like to raise as much as we possibly can to help with research for these youngsters by doing the above walk and as our average walking distance is 4 miles this WILL be a challenge for us.
Quote from Pam Wheeler
“Having taken my clothes etc., to the DebRA charity shop in Church Road, Bookham for 22 years and also buying many items from there, it struck me that I didn’t really know what it was all about. The Manager, Ann, gave me some leaflets and explained in detail what happened to these youngsters and that was when I decided to do something, however small. I asked Lynda if she would walk with me and she agreed wholeheartedly and together we hope to raise at least £250.00.”
--- Late News - they actually raised £757.76! |
